Bob Marley, Chalcogenide

Yesterday the 25th Anniversary of the death of Bob Marley.
I saw him open for the Commodores in Madison Square Garden in 1980. He wasnt the huge icon with USA blacks that he was with the rest of the world, most were there to see the Commodores (I left before the end of their show)
It was great to see Bob live, I arrived in the USA via Jamaica & Guatemala. BT (Wankers Truss) were paying for my relocation from England, They were miffed at my unorthodox route and would only pay for a regular economy London-New York fare. While in JA (Mo Bay & North shore, didnt get to Kingston), I went into a record store and said give me a bunch of great reggae, got a pile of singles and a few LPs that lasted for years. Most lost now. I made a "best of JA" Cassette which vanished from my great Auckland party of 86.tempis fugit, as do great discs.

Calorie restriction does not slow metabolism in mammals, and in yeast and worms, metabolism is both sped up and altered by the diet. We believe, therefore, that calorie restriction is a biological stressor like natural food scarcity that induces a defensive response .. .. STACs such as resveratrol conferred a protective effect on the neurons of normal mice similar to the Wallerian mutation.

scientificamerican .. bug powered fuel cells
The scientists main discovery, however, had to do with the co-evolution of the electrochemical properties of the fuel cell and the actual microbial community. At the start of the experiment, the tiny power plants relied on a diverse community of proteobacteria, including several species of Geobacter and Shewanella, and produced power somewhat inefficiently. But by the end of the experiment--when performance was at its peak--one species, Brevibacillus agri, made up the majority of the electron-producing microbes.

Planet of Slums
The mega-slums of today were largely created in the 1970s and 80s. Before 1960, the question was: Why were Third World cities growing so slowly? There were, in fact, huge institutional obstacles to fast urbanization then. Colonial empires still restricted entry to the city, while in China and other Stalinist countries, a domestic passport system controlled social rights and so internal migration. The big urban boom comes in the 1960s with decolonization. But then, at least, revolutionary nationalist states were claiming that the state could play an integral role in the provision of housing and infrastructure. In the 70s, the state begins to drop out, and with the 80s, the age of structural adjustment, you have the decade of going backwards in Latin America, and even more so in Africa. By then, you had sub-Saharan cities growing at faster velocities than Victorian industrial cities in their boom periods -- but shedding formal jobs at the same time.
.. . The United Nations, in its landmark habitat survey Challenge of the Slums (2003), concludes with precisely this point: “the main single cause of increases in poverty and inequality during 1980s and 1990s was the retreat of the state.”
[But he has no interviews with your actual slum dwellers, so hardly a classic]

I wish I knew what the hell "trackback" means
wikipedia, using the passive voice, confuses rather than explains:
the commenting blogger can notify the other blog with a "TrackBack ping"; the receiving blog will typically display summaries of, and links to, all the commenting entries below the original entry. This allows for conversations spanning several blogs that readers can easily follow
- what the fuck does that mean? Love that bit "readers can easily follow"
........
cruftbox
claims to explain trackbacks:
I paste the TrackBack URL into my weblog entry in the specific space called URLs to Ping.

.. there aint no such "specific space" buddy - that adjective "specific" is a dead give-away.. if there was such a space, calling it "specific" wouldnt be necessary
....
Now if I can only get someone to explain to me what is the point of rss and podcasting...
If I had decent bandwidth, I could see sites & hear mp3s _from their home sites_ rather than downloading them onto my hardDrive...

Did we manage to bring peace, security and prosperity for the people or insecurity and unemployment?
Did we intend to establish justice, or just supported especial interest groups, and by forcing many people to live in poverty and hardship, made a few people rich and powerful – thus trading the approval of the people and the Almighty with theirs’?
Did we defend the rights of the underprivileged or ignore them?
Did we defend the rights of all people around the world or imposed wars on them, interfered illegally in their affairs, established hellish prisons and incarcerated some of them?
Did we bring the world peace and security or raised the specter of intimidation and threats?
Did we tell the truth to our nation and others around the world or presented an inverted version of it?
Were we on the side of people or the occupiers and oppressors?
Did our administration set out to promote rational behavior, logic, ethics, peace, fulfilling obligations, justice, service to the people, prosperity, progress and respect for human dignity or the force of guns.
Intimidation, insecurity, disregard for the people, delaying the progress and excellence of other nations, and trample on people’s rights? ..

His big catch was likely an extremely small example of the invasive Nile Perch. And it was caught in his well seeded, 17 foot deep man-made lake.

Letter to Leichardt Council: 11May06 (tomorrow we see if they publish)

Leaf Blowers an abomination

I am shocked to see Leichardt council forcing its employees to use leaf blowers.

Each leaf blower emits as much pollution as 20 cars. The noise is disturbingly similar to human screaming.
They force dust into the air to a much greater extent than a broom.

As we approach the end of cheap oil, its criminally absurd and wasteful to force council workers to strap petrol engines to their backs. Vibrations, noise, and benzine fumes, means these workers health will be compromised for the rest of their lives.

Some executive made the decision to buy & maintain blowers. Why? My guess is he drives a big car, and feels that engines are wonderful and modern. Whereas they are dated and disgusting.

Bring back the broom.

Wear a fish-hook, get recognised as a Kiwi wherever you go in the world.
Why doesnt NZ licence some whalebone carvers, so we dont have to wear cow bone?

In 1967 we found a sperm whale carcass on Mason's bay in Stewart Island. We immediately thought "great, whalebone"
but it was impossible to get into the body with machete - it takes a chainsaw, which is such a disturbing image that NZ now bans the taking of bones from dead whales.

The human brain has multiple mirror neuron systems that specialize in carrying out and understanding not just the actions of others but their intentions, the social meaning of their behavior and their emotions.

Parkins details:
A 1000 MWe plant requires a thermal power of about 3000 MW, 20% of which must be absorbed by the vessel wall. If we assume an average heat transfer rate of 0.3 MW/m2, the vessel wall and blanket-shield each must have an area of 2000 m2. To absorb the 14 MeV neutrons and to shield against the radiation produced requires a blanket-shield thickness of ~1.7 m of expensive materials. This is a volume of 3400 m3, which, at an average density of about 3 g/cm3, would weigh 10,000 metric tons. A conservative cost would be ~$180/kg, for a total blanket-shield cost of $1.8 billion. This amounts to $1800/kWe of rated capacity--more than nuclear fission reactor plants cost today. This does not include the vacuum vessel, magnetic field windings with their associated cryogenic system, and other systems for vacuum pumping, plasma heating, fueling, “ash” removal, and hydrogen isotope separation. Helium compressors, primary heat exchangers, and power conversion components would have to be housed outside of the steel containment building--required to prevent escape of radioactive tritium in the event of an accident. It will be at least twice the diameter of those common in nuclear plants because of the size of the fusion reactor.
Scaling of the construction costs from the Bechtel estimates suggests a total plant cost on the order of $15 billion, or $15,000/kWe of plant rating. At a plant factor of 0.8 and total annual charges of 17% against the capital investment, these capital charges alone would contribute 36 cents to the cost of generating each kilowatt hour. This is far outside the competitive price range.

Richard Carlton, Huygens, BBC radio3 World Music, Zarqawi

Richard Carlton, Aus 60 minutes journo, dropped dead on TV yesterday, in the background of a group of journos. He had just asked the mine manager why they persisted in an unsafe area. Bad boy Richard, while the Nation waits for those 2 trapped miners, angry questions were supposed to wait. So you paid with your life.
Oddly his home channel 9 failed to interrupt a footie broadcast, so his death inmentioned on 9 for 90 minutes. His co-host said you either loved or hated him...
Google first page didnt mention his death, but did throw up this, from a Siamese twin:

When we were younger, television crews would come from all over the world on a weekly basis. These days they come less often, perhaps because we are not as cute now as when we were younger. The last interview we did was with Richard Carlton for Sixty Minutes, a follow-up to a story they made a few years ago. I had thought that Richard Carlton was a smarmy git from seeing him on television, and meeting him confirmed it. He asked us all of the usual questions, which were either patronising or leading or both, and my brother replied with the usual answers. During the interview I began to feel very angry with this man. Finally, to close the interview, he told us that we were very brave individuals. I said to him, what does that mean? What are you talking about? Nothing has happened to us. This isn’t Kafka’s Metamorphosis, we didn’t wake up one morning and discover we had turned into monstrous vermin. We were born like this. We aren’t brave. If anything we’re an anachronism. If our mother had been given an ultrasound like everyone else we would have been aborted. We’re fucking freaks.
Sixty Minutes decided to edit that bit out. I think the literary reference threw them.
.. My brother collects Barbie dolls .. Then there are his favourites, the factory seconds once sold cheap to employees, until Mattel discovered these mutant Barbies were being resold to collectors, and began destroying them instead. He keeps them hidden from me: microcephalic Barbies with foreshortened heads, or twisted arms and legs, with blotched skin or cheeks sprouting stray clumps of hair like warts. Sick dolls, the vinyl flesh bubbled with syphilitic chancres, twisted fingers and hair and eyes emerging like malignant teratomas from their guts. Do you understand now? And two days ago his latest acquisition came and he showed it to me: two Barbies, side by side and joined by a lump of vinyl from chest to hips, naked in a transparent display case. So I grabbed it and threw it out of the window, and then I took Cas and Bindie and dragging him screaming into the kitchen I put Cas and Bindie head first into the In-Sink-Erator and ground them into vinyl shavings. The sad thing is, both Cas and Bindie were part of his collection. They were his favourites. His friend Lisa is a Miss Barbie and Robbie is a fucking GI Joe. You thought they were real people?
