NZ folks, dont miss this lecture in Palmie:

..the Allan Wilson Centre series DNA50: 50 years of the Double Helix held in Palmerston North

the third and final seminar in the Allan Wilson series is on 18 November, presented by the "Father" of The Seven Daughters of Eve, Bryan Sykes, Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Oxford. The best-selling author has explained that almost everyone in Europe is descended from only seven women, based upon their mitochondrial DNA traced through the female line. Entrance to the seminar is free but email sykespalmerston@rsnz.org to reserve a ticket.

But DO miss this premiere:

Christopher Lee is to boycott The Return of the King film world premiere in Wellington after learning all his scenes as the evil wizard Saruman have been cut

This blog needs a picture about here

www.smirkingchimp.com continues to be a stalwart source of warnings

Al Gore 9Nov03
Remarks FREEDOM AND SECURITY
in the name of security, this Administration has attempted to relegate the Congress and the Courts to the sidelines and replace our democratic system of checks and balances with an unaccountable Executive. And all the while, it has constantly angled for new ways to exploit the sense of crisis for partisan gain and political dominance. How dare they!

Scott Ritter

I inspected this facility in June of 1996. We were looking for weapons of mass destruction (WMD). While I found no evidence of WMD, I did find an organization that specialized in the construction and employment of "improvised explosive devices" - the same IEDs that are now killing Americans daily in Iraq.

Patrick Doherty

Democracy is not incompatible with Islam, but it is incompatible with oil-dominated economies..., our intervention in the region has ratcheted up the perception of injustice to a fever pitch, inspiring hordes of young men to sacrifice their lives against the occupying power. And unrest in Georgia, Venezuela, Colombia, and Nigeria are keeping investment down and prices up.

..we need to switch to renewables..changing our land-use patterns from suburban sprawl to metropolitan smart-growth; moving ..to waste taxes and markets free of subsidies.

The sad irony is that American men and women are dying in Iraq to protect a 60-year-old economic idea that is failing 80 percent of Americans and threatening our shores with terrorism..addressing the problem will lead to an enormous domestic economic boom and transform the conditions that perpetuate poverty and humiliation abroad

10 November 2003

Sunday, the Newtown festivus,
Goths hot in black, dog races, White girls trying to rap.
I counted 3 Socialist tables (the Abercrombie Resistance not included)
Oddly reassuring,things haven't changed in 40 years - a lot of Socialists,still factionalised

Nowhere to show my Newtown pics,
so I took the 2 snaps of "The old Fishshop cafe" to the cafe itself.
They dont have much wall space, but the waiter took both with some enthusiasm.

Saturday to Bondi for "Sculpture by the sea" The walk is still a wonder.
All Whales already passed South I guess.
Nothing as exciting as the first couple of years,
when the clifftop path art idea was new.
One artist had got hold of a Tank {from the army?}
and turned it into a caravan, you kind of had to be there.
None of my sculpture pics are much good, (none blogged so far)
I was put off by the hundreds of people digital snapping.

I used to walk those cliff paths in 89,
would meet 5 or 6 people in a morning.

Asawa has a new project - to build a house
down in Bagong Silang ("Newtown") Phase 9
The whole thing will go up for about $1K
"hollow block, Iron.
(labour is $6 per day)
The tricky bit is to get piped water
- you have to join some sort of Block association.
I guess getting an electric meter will be tricky.

The land is apparently owned by a sister.
I can imagine the day when family feuds
drive us out, so may not be a good investment.
but is a great fun project.
