Climate Change, Makati coup , Batteries, Garlic, Bilal Hussein

Climate Change [CC]
UN Human Development report Nov 2007
Seems extremely optimistic, only 600 Million people will starve by the 2080s.
Given that CO2 emissions and Arctic ice loss are above the maximal lines on most scenarios,
this is a very cheery prediction.

Something between that 600M and Lovelock's 200 Million survivors seems more likely

Another optimistic estimate, from PRC: Dep Min Agric, reckons that by 2030, China will be looking to buy 40Million tons of wheat. Rather possible that most of Australias 20M Ton crop growing area will by then have migrated into the Southern Ocean.
Bad luck for New Zealand, which will suffer directly among the least from CC. But NZ currently imports 70% of its wheat from Aus. Not happy to have to compete with PRC on a shrinking world market. NZ's east will dry, so no wheat there.
As PRC's wheat zone migrates up into Siberia, what strife can we expect.?

Unknowns: Monsoons may be OK for SouthAsia (but floods?) China crop biome movements not clear.

Climate change ... .
Reduced agricultural productivity. Around
three-quarters of the worlds population
living on less than US$1 a day depend
directly on agriculture. Climate change
scenarios point to large losses in productivity
for food staples linked to drought and
rainfall variation in parts of sub-Saharan
Africa and South and East Asia. Projected
revenue losses for dryland areas in
sub-Saharan Africa amount to 26 percent
by 2060, with total revenue losses of US$26
through its impact on agriculture and food security,
climate change could leave an additional
600 million facing acute malnutrition by
the 2080s undp

If its 'only' 600M malnourished, then CC isnt worth a candle. If its half+ hungry, with wars for wheat, then CC is the main game.
If the first 1.5°C is good for Russia, Canada,North Europe, then the climate train will get up such momentum that theres no possibility of avoiding a crash.

[reports in pdf, why??? almost as bad as ppt - which I never view pdf is grotesque, unnecessary, and makes it tedious to extract quotes]]

11/30/2007 Yet another Makati mini-bar coup:
Makati coup Peninsular hotel:
"Senator Antonio Trillanes, who led a failed mutiny in 2003 against President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and was elected to the upper house in May, was hauled away in handcuffs."

RP only gets 17% electricity from hydro, so it may join Zimbabwe as an early oil-shock TFN
(totally fucked nation) - you never know, Biafra was an early TFN but is now growing its food (?)

Batteries
The problem with electric cars is that people want similar snappy acceleration and 100kph speed as 100kW petrol cars.
This is exciting, absurd and lethal, not merely to half a million or so car-killed per year, but rather soon lethal to our climate, which will starve most of us.
Ivan Illich had it right: Above 30kph a Society is not convivial. It becomes a world for the machine, not a world for the living.
Electric cars have a danger: they have high torque, ie high acceleration. This means high energy burn. Electric cars will need an accelaration limiter, in addition to a maximum speed limiter - 30kph seems fine, about the speed of a 400 metre sprinter? A bicycle pedaled hard by an old person?

Anyway: battery facts:

"Aviation is going to be the most vulnerable form of transport post peak oil..energy density of Jet-A is about 42-44 MJ/kg, that for Li-ion batteries is between one half and three quarters of a MJ/kg..."
- the quote goes on to say we can still fly if we grow enough sugar. Fine if we dont eat...

.....Firefly .energy density is still no better than ~44 Wh/kg so not that different than a Trojan T105 lead-acid, which costs only 5 cents per watt-hour.
... lead acid chemistry ... is capable of... 170Wh/kg , but ... this type produce on average ... 30-50 Whr/kg.
BatteryType Cost
..........................$ per Wh ...Wh/kg ...Joules/kg ..Wh/liter ..Wh/kg (other estimates)
Lead-acid .......$0.17 ..........41 ...........146,000 ....100 ..........30-50
Alkaline ..........$0.19 ..........110..........400,000 ...320...........80
Carbon-zinc....$0.31............36...........130,000 .... 92
NiMH .............$0.99 ........... 95..........340,000 ...300 ..........60-120
NiCad .............$1.50 ............39..........140,000 ...140 ..........45-80
Lithium-ion....$4.27 ...........128.........460,000 ...230
...........................................................................................LiICo 150-190
...........................................................................................Mn 100-135
............................................................................................P 90-120

(sorry I cant be bothered making a table... why doesnt HTML do tabs?)

."Nanoexa projects that its batteries will provide ..50% higher energy density..than existing Li-ion cells"

.Standard LiIon-cells as in the Tesla Roadster have 0,12 kWh/kg, the altairnano/A123Systems-LiIon-Cells have 0,10 kWh/kg.

Li-S technology provides rechargeable cells with a gravimetric energy density of over 300Wh/kg (2000CE??)

cf petrol
12.7kWh/kg = 45.7MJ/kg

I was in a Hybrid the other day, askedn if its petrol motor stopped when the car was stopped at intersections. "Only if the air-conditioner isnt running" replied the driver - who has an ultra-green profile.

Garlic
I'm sick, partially from not eating enough garlic

In the latest study, performed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, researchers extracted juice from supermarket garlic and added small amounts to human red blood cells. The cells immediately began emitting hydrogen sulfide, the scientists found.

The power to boost hydrogen sulfide production may help explain why a garlic-rich diet appears to protect against various cancers, including breast, prostate and colon ... Higher hydrogen sulfide might also protect the heart ... injecting hydrogen sulfide into mice almost completely prevented the damage to heart muscle caused by a heart attack. ... To maximize the health benefits, you should crush the garlic at room temperature and allow it to sit for about 15 minutes. That triggers an enzyme reaction that boosts the healthy compounds in garlic.

so I was wrong about H2S, I had no idea.
unlocking-the-benefits-of-garlic

But:
"only tamasic and rajasic people benefit from garlic and onions. Saatvic people naturally detest and are harmed by these foods."

But it wasn’t sex, drugs, violence or explicit language that shocked my conscience.
It was the Euros.
The Jay-Z video flashed large stacks of $500 Euros.
When I start seeing rap stars flashing euros instead of U.S. dollars, I know our economy is in trouble.
Jay-Z carries a lot of weight. Just look at what happened when he began boycotting Cristal champagne.
It’s sad that rap stars can no longer show their style with a good old $500 U.S. bills (featuring President McKinley) and now need to flash $500 Euros (featuring some sort of suspension bridge).

Embassy design
March 30, 1965, when a Vietcong car bomb destroyed the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, killing 22 people and injuring 186..ars the same embassy had been violating Vietnam?
.April 1983 ..a van loaded with explosives detonated under the embassy portico, collapsing the front half of the building and killing 63 people. Seventeen of the dead were Americans, of whom eight worked for the C.I.A. The embassy was moved to a more secure location, where nonetheless another truck bomb was exploded, in September 1984, with the loss of 22 lives
...The first Inman compound was completed in Mogadishu in 1989, only to be evacuated by helicopter in 1991 as angry gunmen came over the walls and slaughtered the abandoned Somali staff and their families.
August 7, 1998, however, al-Qaeda drivers bombed the U.S. Embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, killing 301 people and wounding about 5,000 more

Chernobyl First Chapter, ‘Arsenals of Folly’, , By Richard Rhodes November 25, 2007
It fell out by size. Big blocks of hot graphite landed on the roofs of Number Four's turbine hall and Reactor Number Three. To lower construction costs, the roofs had been covered with flammable asphalt; the hot graphite set them on fire. Blocks and smaller pieces of graphite landed on the grounds around the building and splashed hissing into the four-mile-long cooling pond that lay between the plant and the Pripyat River. The cooling pond was fed by and drained into the river, which drained in turn into the big reservoir downstream that stored the water supply of the city of Kiev, the Soviet Union's third-largest city, with a population of some 2.5 million people.
