Today Fallujans are too busy trying to stay alive in freezing refugee camps to worry about ballot papers that haven’t arrived for an election they have no intention of voting in. As one resident comments, "We’re not interested in this sort of democracy" ...(Guardian films clip)

Ministers have been warned they face a "complete strategic failure" ..
Rice, however, offered the most telling observations after the April 25 meeting. The problems arising from insufficient supply to meet rising world oil demand, she said, "have to be addressed, not by jawboning, but by having a strategic plan for dealing with the problem." Anyone familiar with the Bush administration lexicon cannot help but be troubled by this call for a "strategic plan" to obtain additional energy,

20-22 May 2005.. ..It’s coming apart at the seams now in Iraq. We saw on the news today that members of the Mehdi Army in the south, the militia of Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, exchanged gunfire with members of the ING (Iraqi National Guard) who in the south are primarily, if not entirely composed of members of the Badr Army, also a Shia group. So now we have Shia fighting Shia.
Jawaharlal Nehru, in a letter to his daughter, wrote about the British occupation of Iraq ("Iraq and the virtues of aerial bombing," June 7, 1933):
"The novel feature of the modern type of imperialism is its attempt to hide its terrorism and exploitation behind pious phrases about 'trusteeship' and the 'good of the masses' and 'the training of the backward peoples in self-government' and the like."
Nehru's letters to his daughter Indira Gandhi - who became India's prime minister in 1966 - were written from a British prison in India. Published as "Glimpses of World History",
Half of the 40 iconic items from the Iraq National Museum in Baghdad still had not been retrieved. And of at least 15,000 items looted from its storerooms, about 8,000 have yet to be traced."
Both Iran and Syria have recently been equipped with the very latest version of this missiles, the S-300PMU-2, which is larger, faster and even more efficient at hunting down its prey. The range of this upgraded missile is in excess of 125 miles, with the ability to acquire and kill targets flying as low as 30 feet. The Russians routinely shoot down random target drones travelling at 5,800 feet per second, and further claim the weapon is easily capable of destroying targets approaching at up to 15,500 feet per second, or Mach 14.
Vladimir Putin calmy arrived in Palestine to announce that he would be providing the Palestinian security forces with helicopters and a minimum of 50 armoured vehicles to fight "terrorists", it required very little imagination to work out which terrorists Putin was subtly referring to.

marklynasOil's dirty future.. from Mark 25th May, 2005
Here, folks, is what we're up against. The Canadian tar sands contain the largest petroleum deposit in the world outside Saudi Arabia. The only problem is that to get useable oil out of the sandy mess you have to burn up vast quantities of natural gas - releasing thousands of tons of CO2 in the process. And that's before the oil's even got near a car fuel tank. It's incredibly inefficient, but there's money in it - especially with conventional crude prices still close to $50 a barrel. And as Canada's minister of the environment says forlornly: "There is no minister of the environment on Earth who can stop this from going forward." Writes reporter Robert Collier: "Up close, a visitor quickly enters a world of vast industrial scale, in which the tar-like scent of the sands permeates everything. The largest of the pits is a 50-square-mile moonscape of slag heaps and tailings ponds..." And some people have a problem with wind turbines? Get the whole shocking story from the San Francisco Chronicle.
