Found a copy of "Our Lady of the Flowers" Jean Genet 1943 in a 1974 paperback edition at Berkelouws.
Imagine the Wellington public library lending this scandalous book to a 14 yr old schoolboy in 1962! Our school-yard group also read Molloy and 'Malone Dies' around then
(which Wgtn adults were reading Beckett then?) Around then I read both versions of Justine (de Sade and Durrell) - the Sade was probably not Wgtn library! Celine followed. I had already read Crime and Punishment. Earlier, around age 12, the Brothers had read 'The Hobbit' to us and we were encouraged to read 'Tristram Shandy'. After such a youth, I barely read fiction now. Similarly, having been educated by Godard and Antonioni, I hardly go to movies now.

A former Army Major has questioned the findings of a study which says there is no link between the high cancer rates among those who took part in British nuclear tests in Australia in the 1950s - and their exposure to radiation.
The Federal Government commissioned study released yesterday found that while those who took part in the nuclear tests had higher rates of certain cancers, it was not linked to their exposure to radiation.
Veterans Affairs Minister Bruce Billson says despite there being no connection, there will be free cancer treatment for those who took part.
..Major Alan Batchelor ..says information in the study showing extremely high radiation levels among veterans are ignored in the findings. "You will find that the levels are about 200 times out," he said.
