Kill germs in water by putting plastic bottles in the sun for 5 hours:
"Important for an efficient inactivation of faecal coliforms is sufficient exposure of the contaminated water to the sun (500 W/m2 during at least 5 hours) in an appropriate container and clear water (water turbidity should be less than 30 NTU)."

..phthalates are endocrine disrupting ..
.. Prof Niels Skakkebæk Rigshospitalet .. Environmental Health Perspectives.
..newborn testis may be fragile to such toxins,
..continuously exposed to phthalates from products such as PVC flooring, children's toys, detergents, cosmetics and food packaging.
..100 baby boys in Denmark and Finland.
At three months, boys have a peak in hormones.."mini puberty"..
..analysed the concentration of six phthalates in the mother's breast milk.
"If mothers had more of certain phthalates in their breast milk, the boys apparently responded by having less testosterone action," ..
..the observed correlations between phthalates in breast milk and hormones in boys could be due to exposures to phthalates ..in utero ..

..another recent study in EHP..found mothers who excreted high amounts of phthalates in their urine had male children with a smaller anogenital distances.
"They were slightly demasculinised," says Skakkebæk.
..In cosmetics..parabens, which also act as endocrine disruptors, he says...

"..that most young girls with premature breast development have toxic levels of phthalates in their blood; those phthalates appear to have seeped out of plastic food and beverage containers. ..Plastic containers that become warm are more likely to ooze phthalate .. Environmental Health Perspectives..On the cover of the issue in which the report appeared, the editors chose to feature the picture of a young woman drinking water from a plastic bottle.

"..Levels of the plasticizers di(2-ethylhexyl)adipate (DEHA) and di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) detected in the water were 0.010 - 0.046 µg/L for DEHA and 0.10 - 0.71 µg/L for DEHP. As concentrations in blank samples were in a similar range (average 0.018 µg/L for DEHA and 0.11 µg/L for DEHP),"
The "blank" samples apparently indicate the fact that phthalates are everywhere!
The authors believe that the DEHP levels from this small test are not dangerous. They may be right. ( nb 0.71 looks to be significantly higher than 0.11 - maybe...)
I believe I can detect a "plastic" taste from sun heated plastic bottles. It would be interesting to do a double blind taste test. Does a noticeable taste indicate danger? Does waste water treatement look for ppb?
