Kepler, Albatross deaths, Wind turbines

Kepler to launch 10:49:57 p.m. EST (16:49 NZ Sat ?) Cape Canaveral Pad 17-B Delta II.
To Earth-trailing heliocentric orbit with a period of 372.5 days

Kepler will look for Earth-like planets, by transit dimming
170,000 stars to be studied over 3 years (6 years of fuel in the tanks) (stars picked from 400,000 in the 20° square field of view)
If 5% of good stars have earth-like planets , Keppler will give a reliable probability rating.
The idea was that then some Interferometry satellites would be launched to image these planets.
multiple mirrors on a beam, or multiple separate mirrors.. these billion dollar projects are not now in the works
If we are indeed on the Olduvai-Dieoff Peak then they will never fly, not in the remaining millions of years our species may have.
Thus we will understand why we see no radio signals from out there. . . intelligence isnt smart enough to harbour its resources.

French plutonium shipment set for Japan
Chloe Coupeau March 2, 2009
Seems this wont go through Suez, and past all those cheerful Somali pirates, but how about the pirates in the Mallaca Straights?
France is set to send recycled nuclear fuel to Japan in what environmentalists say is the biggest ever plutonium shipment ..
MOX, or mixed oxide, is a blend of plutonium and reprocessed uranium that Japan...wants to start using for the first time. (?)
..1.8 tonnes of plutonium.
"That's enough to make 225 nuclear weapons,"...
Greenpeace said two ships from Britain's Pacific Nuclear Transport company, each with armed police on board,..would this week take on board the fuel at the northern French port of Cherbourg.
"The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) believes that MOX can be used to make nuclear bombs," i..
The fuel will travel from France to Japan using three possible routes - via the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Horn or the Panama Canal, it said.

Africa is sucking down carbon
79 plot surveys ..across 10 African countries ...1968 through 2007. Limiting their surveys to .. trunks 10 cm+... how the trunk size changed over time. The result: Trunks in mature forests have been expanding, adding on average 0.63 metric tons of carbon per hectare per year.

Milk
half a. litre of milk or more per day, and it can be skimmed milk, could take someone who has marginal levels of B12 into the safe range. But even drinking just two glasses a day can protect against having low levels," [protection against Alzheimers]

But... doubles the risk of Prostate cancer?

Albatross deaths
Susan Waugh NIWA Forest & Bird
on the wireless... I got confused by her message. She seemed to say that the great albatross by-catch deaths problem is solved, by fishing at night...
But, then she said
1000 Albatross being caught last year ... 12 Chatham Island Albatross
trawl fisheries hitting cable, 200 fall into sea for every 1 on board
petrols 7000 hit wires NZ southern waters
grey petrol 1/3 of the population caught by fishing
NZ in Ross sea is OK, good use of scaring streamers?
So some petrols are highly threatened
... some petrols have huge populations

Wheat's off
My guess is that the disorder in agriculture will be pretty severe this year, especially since some of the world's most productive places -- California, northern China, Argentina, the Australian grain belt -- are caught in extremes of drought on top of capital shortages

Asteroid near miss
National Geographic News March 2, 2009
Sky-watchers in Asia, Australia, and the Pacific islands welcomed a surprise guest earlier today: an asteroid that passed just 41,010 miles (66,000 kilometers) above Earth.
Discovered only days ago, asteroid 2009 DD45 zipped between our planet and the moon at 13:44 universal time (8:44 a.m. ET). The asteroid was moving at about 12 miles (20 kilometers) a second when it was closest to Earth.

Vaccines
since 1988, the vaccine court has awarded money judgments, often in the millions of dollars, to thirteen hundred and twenty two families whose children suffered brain damage from vaccines. In many of these cases, the government paid out awards following a judicial finding that vaccine injury lead to the child's autism spectrum disorder.

CSIRO printing plastic PV Solar cells 3% efficient so far
nationalgeographic
V(CSIRO) project leader Gerry Wilson told Australian ABC News he expects the output to more than double by next year and top 10 percent after that.
He said he hoped the solar cells would be ready for mass production in five years.
The main advantage is that the cells can now be produced in vast sheets or rolls, making the cells ideal for windows or large-scale, rooftop applications, Wilson said.
The printers could turn out 62 miles (100 kilometers) of solar sheeting every day, according to CSIRO.

Mumbo Jumbo
"Environment Court" halts Wind Farm near Hastings because they say Maoris dont like it.
"The adverse effects of the proposal on what is undoubtedly an outstanding landscape, and its adverse effects on the relationship of Maori with this land and the values ..."
This sucks in many ways

1) Drive around Northland and notice that almost every hilltop shows relic signs of terracing, from the days when Maori lived in a state of permanent alert, at least in the summer war season, ready to run behind palisades.

Turbines dont damage hills, they may seem not-pretty to some pompous romantic eyes.

2)"Maori culture" like any culture, is an invention. Slavery, Aristocracy, permanent warfare have mostly been dropped. Womens rights to speak have been added. Nothing wrong with inventing a noble culture, but get real, pretty "landscapes" are not environment.

Electricity trumps stone age.

Hopefully the new rightwing regime will throw out these namby pamby cultural panderers.

Idiot/Savant says
rejected it on the grounds that it would "desecrate" an outstanding landscape.
- dont know where she got those quote marks
