Lake Palin
Welcome to what may turn out to be the worst single human-caused environmentalCosmicVariance
disaster ever. (Unless you regard global warming in general as a single event.
Semantics.)
Exxon Valdez was ...40 million liters
...happened on Earth Day.... Is it any coincidence that Halliburton just "repaired" the rig?
..40 miles offshore ......
Share of USA oil:
but in the last couple of years, as deep water wells have startedtod
coming on board, it has begun increasing again. If companies are successful in
drilling more deep water wells, oil production in the Gulf of Mexico may
grow again, perhaps to 2 or even 2.5 million
barrels a day, before resuming its decline. This would not be a huge
amount relative to world production of crude oil of 73 million barrels
a day, but compared to the US's crude oil production of 5.4 million
barrels a day, this would be a substantial part. In the absence of
deep water drilling, Gulf of Mexico production would likely continue to decline, as it did in the 2003 to 2008 period.
..
On September 2, 2009, Deepwater Horizon drilled on the Tiber oilfieldTOD
the deepest oil and gas well ever drilled with a vertical depth of 35,050 feet
(10,680 m) and measured depth of 35,055 feet (10,685 m), of which 4,132 feet
(1,259 m) was water.
...Sky Truth put out an estimate that there is actually 20,000 barrels
per day leaking into the Gulf
WSJ
Ian MacDonald, professor of oceanography at Florida State University
who specializes in tracking ocean oil seeps from satellite imagery,
said there may already be more than 9 million gallons of oil floating
in the Gulf now, based on his estimate of a 25,000 barrel-a-day leak
rate
SUVs now all suspect..
.....................................
Times square the 'Taliban' loaded a SUV with fireworks (!)
...great idea, now all black SUVs will be dreaded,
much better than attacking public transport...
NZ mines in National Parks
- the rightist Govt has proposed this, seemingly to 'poke a stick' at a complacent electorate.
no matter what is done,... handing of South Island braided rivers to polluting dairy farmers, handing of fisheries to Maori to hand to foreign non-union sea scrapers, handing of prisoners to corporations as cheap labour...
the polls dont budge..
At last... a big demo in Quueen St.. of course the age of big peaceful demos is past (Iraq war anyone)
But the age of agro isnt past... Madagascar threw out a govt that wanted to sel the farm to the PRC.
Holiday in Greece, Thailand, Fiji... anyone?
if "the numbers are roughly 50-50 on this" as Brownlee claims, where are the 50,000 people marching down Queen St in favour of mining?
norightturn
Typical Scenario:
After some time (years?) a huge tailings dam fails.. The original mining corporation dissolves its 'personhood' and morphs into another corporation which disclaims any responsibility.
... can BP dissolve itself?
Is it at all possible to prevent a corporation from vanishing??

Investor Marc Faber said China’s economy will slow and possibly “crash” within ayear as declines in stock and commodity prices signal the nation’s propertyHaving failed to secure a mortgage on a half-million dollar weatherboard cottage in Grey Lynn, I am now a non-person.........Its just that houses are such a nifty thing, its so churlish to complain about mortgaes.
bubble is set to burst.
...
even if USA, China, England etc etc may crash due to them.
OTOH, I built a 2-story rendered hollow-block house for around $6K.. Local labour, local design (nothing on paper). 60M^2, enough for a couple of adults and a bunch of kids.
Down in the Bundocks
... so its not anti-house, its anti greed, Iguess.

"Crazy Response Unit"
As Al Jazeera reported last year, the Counter Terrorism Police (CTP)
suffered a spate of resignations after the presidential elections,
because of allegations of political interference.
aljazeera
..an elite force mentored by the New Zealand special forces, is easy
to spot. All its men wear black uniforms...
The unit has now been reconstituted, and many of the highly trained
officers who left the force have been persuaded to return.
..all the black police cars had been repainted. "CTP" has become "CRU."
I asked one of the officers what the new initials stood for. His
English was not good.
"Crazy Response Unit," he said.
"The what?" I asked.
"Craziest Response Unit," he seemed to say this time.
It was only when I asked a third time that I realised what he was
trying to say. The new unit is called the Crisis Response Unit.
Palm Oil
aljazeera
Unilever and Nestle, have stopped buying palm oil for use in its
products from Indonesia's largest producer, Sinar Mas.
The firm is accused by Greenpeace, the environmental activists, of
illegally clearing forests in Indonesia for its plantations.
Ampatuan Jr
aljazeera
On Tuesday, Ampatuan Jr, who is the son of the clan leader, called
reporters to a maximum security prison to reiterate his family's
innocence. He also used the news conference to endorse his favoured presidential
candidate in next month's national elections.
Condemnation
"I know very well that I am not the perpetrator because I was in my
town hall then," the former Maguindanao mayor, told reporters.
"We condemn this in the strongest terms, this is so callous... another
indication that we cannot get justice under this administration"
Harry Roque, lawyer for slain journalists
Looking relaxed in a yellow prison T-shirt but no
handcuffs, he went on to endorse Benigno Aquino Jr, the opposition candidate
leading opinion polls ahead of the May 10 presidential elections.

Somalia
thefreemanonline
The Somali customary law, Xeer, has existed since pre-colonial times
and continued to operate under colonial rule. The Somali nation-state
tried to replace the Xeer with government legislation and enforcement.
However, in rural areas and border regions where the Somali government
lacked firm control, people continued to apply the common law. When
the Somali state collapsed, much of the population returned to their
traditional legal system.
There is no doubt that Somalia remains extremely poor today. However,
as far as living standards can be assessed, they appear to be
improving since the collapse of Somalia’s national government. In
fact, standards are improving faster in Somalia than in most of
sub-Saharan Africa.

Kepler, the NASA mission manoeuvring to spot the first Earth-like
extrasolar planet, is supposed to publicly release data in June for
the 156,000 stars at which the orbiting telescope stares. But on
Monday a NASA advisory panel recommended that Kepler be allowed to
censor 400 "objects of interest" — presumably good planet candidates —
until February 2011, giving the mission team more time to firm up
discoveries, rule out false positives
