Transit strike NY - 25 years ago, my first week in the Black Tower, Transit strike, so bus to Staten Island, ferry to Manhattan, the towers looming through the fog. Walking home for hours down Brooklyn to Bay Ridge, what seemed like hundreds of identical blocks, with identical stores on each corner. Next day on the back of DJs Triumph, the only motorbike mad enough to brave the icy metal grill of the Brooklyn bridge. DJ , a young English guy, who bullshitted his way into a programmers job at Chemical, just to get the free flight & baggage from London. Got canned, but later, under the derelict western motorway, cold night, half a dozen boom boxes tuned to FM
"Rockaway, Rockaway" , his alarmingly young mother arrived on roller skates. DJ had been sent to Israel, didnt relish being shot at by Arabs, hit the big Apple with me. I last saw him crashing in the West side apartment of Susie, whos claim to fame was an affair with the funny looking guy from 'Bonnie & Clyde' Anyway DJ was into electronics, light shows & lasers. He hooked my hi-fi to the yoke of my colour TV to make a light show. I built a drum synth from a kit. We could have become the disco-engineers of the 80s, but I left town. Often wonder what happened to DJ,
