Jaslyn Hall Presents: Habib Koite
From the backstreet bars of Bamako to International Big Star. HK is from a griot family, but has a tremendous range of influences.
At The Basement Sydney tomorrow (Wednesday 22Oct) and at Petersham RSL on Friday - I got the 32-to last ticket there.
Habib was well regarded by Banning Eyre in his book "In Griot Time" - which book is one of the best stories of a white guy in a third world setting, as well as being the definitive book on Malian music - Banning is not shy of namedropping ("You musnt neglect these things Banning" says Oumou Sangaré)
Good to see Jaslyn Hall is gainfully employed. The ABC dumped her after she spent 9 years teaching Australians about World Music. Jaslyn knows everything about world music, a fan of West African amongst all the others.
I have a dozen 90 minute cassettes crammed with the last few years of her radio show, I used to record her 3 hour shows on Video Cassette, and edit them down to 90 Minute cassettes - most Mondays I would get an hour of excellent tracks.
