Wireless in Java
Computer Stories
Finally got the Hills Antenna hoisted (16db grid, around $120) . Unwired now green lighted and coming down fast.
Cat 5 cables draped all over the new office. Internet now at least as fast as Mort Bay, where we were in line of site to Unwired ,and our 1M account often came down over 100K bytes/second (Using of course, that racehorse DownloadExpress)
Oddly we could NOT get "Straight through" connection working last night, we only got IP with the router on. Thats a mystery, and without straight through we cant use the metering software from Unwired or Navini.
The boss plans to trash the Navini router and get a Belkin router, in the hope that our Belkin radio cards will work. I pleaded with him to trash the Belkin cards instead, Forum scuttlebutt has it that the current Belkin chipset wont work with Linux.
- we shall see. Right now the Belkin cards see signal, but no internet...
Software woes: I'm writing Java using Borland JBuilder because 1)I have a sentimental attachment to Borland, TurboPascal in the early 80s was sub $50 and brought programming to the masses 2)JBuilder is the only cheap software I can find that has data-linked fields. ie the IDE has drag-n-drop fields that connect to a database with a Next-Prev-Save button bar, no user coding required!
Who else does this cheaply? All the Eclipse crew are still bespoke wheel re-inventors.
Anyway JBuilder9 was cheap and worked OK with mySQL on Wind98. BUT on Wind2000 with JB2005 mySQL works within the IDE but the standalone Java jar cant find the JDBC driver. The mySQL forums say "go ask Borland" , Borland forums say "go ask mySQL"
- deadlock! So I decide to convert to Firebird database which is the OpenSource incarnation of InterBase, a venerable old database which Borland bought some time back, so it oughta work with JB. Which it does, but the "Standard" SQL datatypes differ somewhat, and at the moment I'm grappling with weird messages:'
rdh DataSet has no unique row identifiers.
Note: For QueryDataSets you need to disable metaDataUpdate.ROWID in the MetaDataUpdate property, in addition to setting the RowId property on a column. error code 37
rdh Missing or invalid characters in field error code 1011
rdh Missing or invalid characters in field error code 1011
["rdh" is my label for DataSetException.addExceptionListener(new rdh(this)); , so I know its a DataSetException
but not exactly where...]
Problems, not insoluable i trust. The Firebird Forums are helpful, but I dont want to deluge with a pile of newbie questions,
so I await the Amazon airmail book...Firebird comes without a complete document set, you have to pay.]
On closer inspection, downloaded Java5 from Sun 134Meg at 24,000 Bytes/sec
which is very slow. Admittedly I was surfing at the same time, but its still disapointing.
I now believe Mort Bay was early days at Unwired. It seems the 1Megbit account may not be close to 1Meg download...
