All last night sat on the levee and moaned
finally, the boots... americablog
Just moments ago at the Ferragamo on 5th Avenue, Condoleeza Rice was seen spending several thousands of dollars on some nice, new shoes (we’ve confirmed this, so her new heels will surely get coverage from the WaPo’s Robin Givhan). A fellow shopper, unable to fathom the absurdity of Rice’s timing, went up to the Secretary and reportedly shouted, “How dare you shop for shoes while thousands are dying and homeless!” Never one to have her fashion choices questioned, Rice had security PHYSICALLY REMOVE the woman.

In 1974, we thought western industrial society was about to collapse.
But ideas, it appears, dont collapse irrigation societies.
Today Samuel R. Delany's 1974 Dahlgren seems immanent, as 60,000 mostly black USA citizens are abandoned to gunfire in a disaster South.
Who would have thought that a flat affect president would preside over a flatly pathetic response to an ocean surge.
This is not the big one. Despite the grotesque sight of drifting giant offshore oil rigs looming off the beach, the real collapse will come later.
In about ten years time, when the oil peak has well passed, then you will see collapse, anarchy, mass rioting and shooting in the streets.
These riots and deaths are merely a small foretaste of the collapse to come.
Irrigation societies may be immune from dissent, but levees that fail presage thoroughgoing collapse.
